In 1983 was constituted the Private Association of Faithful ‘Casa Betania’, that in 1985 was approved by the Provincial Minister of the Friar Minor Capuchins of Apulia and, after a few days, was also recognized as ecclesiastical association, ex can 299 § 3 C.I.C., by the Bishop of the Diocese, the Servant of God Mons. Antonio Bello, who encouraged its development.
In 1987 Mons. Antonio Bello himself promoted the community ‘Casa Betania’ into Public Association of Faithful and in 1992 he also consulted the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life, applying for the authorization to erect for the Institute of Consecrated Life of diocesan right ‘Fraternità Francescana di Betania’ (Franciscan Fraternity of Bethany).
The application was accepted on 8th December 1998 – Solemnity of The Immaculate – with the Decree signed by the Bishop Mons. Donato Negro.
Our Institute has ever since been one of the new forms of consecrated life that need pontificial approval, as established by can 605 C.I.C., and to which Holy Father John Paul II refers in the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Vita Consecrata of 1996 , nn. 12 and 62.
